CHEVY MUSCLE CARS

One girl's perspective on a failed Facebook poll...

Pic from caricos.com

There it is. One of the most amazing creatures on this earth...the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Boasting 650 beautiful horses that somehow manage 0 to a zillion mph in 3 seconds. I just KNEW it would beat out the Ford wats-its-name as the poster child for the HTAuto "Chevy vs. Ford" Facebook poll (Somewhere here). But for some strange reason, there was a tie. Hmmm....I smell a hacker...

Anyway, the Facebook gods could not be fooled and gave the ultimate win to the true winner, the Corvette Z06 and its Chevy family. And, as promised, I will delight and amaze you with all the muscle car reasons Chevy should have been the undisputed champion.

Why Chevy?

Why? Because it has produced some of the most awe-inspiring and coveted muscle cars in the world.

Chevelle

Between 1964 and 1973 Chevrolet produced the infamous Chevelle. There are many in this line that we could talk about, but lets narrow it down to the 1970 Chevelle SS 454 LS6, THE most powerful muscle car of its time...454 cubic inch engine turning loose 450 ponies...Thereby creating a Chevrolet legend.

Camaro

So many Mustang eaters to choose from, and even the lessers of the group still look good. My personal favorite? The 1969 Chevrolet ZL1 Camaro. Only 69 of these were made, 20 of which went into organized drag racing, setting records whenever rubber met track. This was due to the 427 (ZL1) engine that was an unheard of aluminum block and head, having over 500 bhp, and weighing just 500lbs. Can you say speed? Although they were a bit of a hard sell at the time because of the whopping price tag of $7,200, they are now one of the most sought after classic cars.

Nova

Could you not just stare at that for hours?

But as we all know, inner beauty is what counts, and the1968 COPO Nova did not disapoint. Its original design was for the track, and the 375 hp 396ci option went head-to-head with the Hemi, and included a rock crusher transmission.

Cultural Expression

The above are only a small sampling of what Chevy has given us. Beyond these classic muscle cars are models that inspire us in our every day lives, especially for those trudging through the long and snowy winters here in the UP...trust me...we need inspiring when we've seen nothing but white for nearly 6 months. The point being, Chevy has become a point of American cultural expression beyond any of its competitors.

You can find proof of this simply by turning on your radio with the Chevy brand appearing in more hit music than any other car maker. Remember American Pie by Don McClean? Not to mention being a country-hits phenomenon with mentions by Tim McGraw, George Jones, Brad Paisley, Brooks and Dunn, (big breath) Phil Vassar, Carrie Underwood, Keny Chesney, Reba McEntire....should I keep going? Switch genres? No...I believe I've made my point. Chevy IS the culture of America.

And for all you Ford lovers out there...including my husband who probably won't talk to me for a week after reading this...I look forward to your heartfelt arguments in the comments section. Next time, remember to vote...then I'll be forced to write about something else.
